Personal Essay v. Memoir

Memoir seems to me to have more to do with a person's story about his or her life. The story can be a portion of that life or that life in totality. It is an autobiographical type of writing. A personal essay however is writing that focuses on a particular subject that the author has first hand knowledge to because of his life's experience.
